Common use
Yasmin is a prescription birth control pill. It is an oral contraceptive that contains a combination of ethinyl estradiol andGestodene. It is available in the United States by TevaWomen's Health. Its FDA approved purpose is to prevent pregnancy bystopping the ovary from releasing an egg (ovulation) each cycle, making the uterine (womb) lining thinner, making it less favorable forimplantation of a fertilized egg. It may also reduce acne in some women, but it is not approved for this purpose. Yasmin is a second generation pill. It is taken once daily, and is easy to remember to take. There are many brands and strengths of Yasmin available, but all work the same. You should not take Yasmin if you are allergic to ethinyl estradiol or Gestodene. You should also not use it if you have a history of blood clots, liver or gallbladder disease, jaundice, severe depression or thoughts of suicide, if you have a history of breast or cervical cancer, or if you smoke and are over 35 years old. Yasmin does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases, such as HIV/AIDS, gonorrhea or chlamydia. If you miss a dose of Yasmin, take it as soon as possible. If you miss two doses, take one today and one tomorrow. If you miss more than one dose, or miss a dose for several days in a row, ask your doctor about restarting the pill. If you stop taking Yasmin, your pill is not effective for birth control. You should also not stop taking it abruptly. Instead, you should decrease your dose of Yasmin gradually over 4 weeks. If you stop taking it, you will need another form of birth control to prevent pregnancy. If you are currently breastfeeding, you should talk with your doctor about whether Yasmin is right for you. Dosage and direction

You should not take Yasmin if you are breastfeeding, as you should not combine contraception with breastfeeding, as breastfeeding alone is effective contraception. Yasmin has not been shown to affect fertility. You should stop taking Yasmin if you become pregnant, as it is not recommended for use in pregnancy. If you stop taking Yasmin you should start taking your contraception as a backup measure. If you are taking Yasmin as contraception and you have had a pregnancy loss, you should stop taking Yasmin, and seek advice from your doctor. Possible side effect

Drug interaction
The information available on the package insert of Yasmin is as follows: Yasmin is contraindicated in patients with a history of venous thromboembolism or a family history of hereditary venous thromboembolism. Yasmin is contraindicated in patients with very close proximity to the occasion of a myocardial infarction. Yasmin is contraindicated in patients with ischemic heart disease (>1 episode of angina pectoris or Prinzmetal angina), patients with a history of Prinzmetal angina, and in patients with unstable angina. Yasmin is contraindicated in patients with a history of cerebral thromboembolism. Yasmin is contraindicated in patients with an arterial or venous thromboembolic event during contraception or during an enhanced risk of thromboembolism, as evidenced by a history of deep venous thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), cerebral vein thrombosis (CVT), or arterial thromboembolism. Yasmin is contraindicated in patients with a history of liver tumor. Yasmin is contraindicated in patients with unexplained vaginal bleeding, if the patient is not sexually active. Yasmin is contraindicated in patients with pregnancy (estimated gestational age <8 weeks, e.g. intrauterine pregnancy with intrauterine fetal death). Yasmin is contraindicated in patients who have a history of pregnancy-induced hypertension (preeclampsia) or who develop hypertension at least 140/90 mm Hg in the absence of a history of hypertension, ipsilateral leg swelling, and proteinuria during pregnancy, and whose blood pressure is 160/95 mm Hg or higher. Yasmin is contraindicated in patients who are taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or who have stopped them within the last 2 weeks.
